Marton Krivan is a University of Tennessee industrial engineering alumnus helping bring a breakthrough PFAS capture material from the lab to the real world at Aquafer Technologies. With years of industry experience and close ties to the region’s startup ecosystem, the newly named ORNL Innovation Crossroads Fellow is dedicated to making East Tennessee a leader in advanced water treatment. What is Aquafer Technologies?
When it comes to tap water, there’s always something new to worry about. At Aquafer Technologies, we are tackling one of the hardest ones: forever chemicals. These substances have contaminated half of America’s drinking water, leading to cancer, immune suppression, and developmental disorders. Starting 2031, the EPA will enforce strict limits on water utilities with fines exceeding $70,000 per day. The problem is, existing solutions to remove these chemicals are largely ineffective, unaffordable, or impossible to scale to the millions of gallons that utilities serve each day.
To solve this, we’ve developed a patent-pending supermaterial that replaces the traditional carbon that utilities are currently using. It lasts ten times longer than the industry standard, cutting their operating costs in half. Thanks to our world-class R&D, our beads target the full spectrum of PFAS, not just the legacy variants. Even better, our material drops into their existing systems with zero new infrastructure, training, or permits. This means end users finally get safe water while utilities are protected against litigation and fines with minimal change to their current operations.
