Who is Kevin Roccapriore?

Dr. Kevin Roccapriore is the founder and CEO of AtomQ, a deep-tech startup developing a fundamentally new manufacturing platform for quantum technologies. AtomQ combines precisely controlled electron beams with a new approach to reprogram materials atom by atom, creating structures and properties that cannot be produced using conventional manufacturing methods. Different from subtractive or additive manufacturing, AtomQ is developing the ability to rewrite a material’s atomic structure, creating new material configurations and useful properties that would otherwise be impossible to achieve. The platform represents a new way to build quantum technologies, with potential applications in quantum sensing, computing, and communications. And it’s all happening right here in Knoxville, TN.

Kevin developed the foundations of AtomQ’s technology while working as a physicist and electron microscopist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. His research focused on automated experimentation, artificial intelligence, and controlling how electron beams interact with materials at the atomic scale. This work led to key advances in the ability to deliberately engineer matter one atom at a time and ultimately inspired the formation of AtomQ.

Kevin earned his PhD in Physics in 2018 and launched AtomQ with support from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lab-Embedded Entrepreneurship Program through Innovation Crossroads. AtomQ continues to partner with Oak Ridge National Laboratory to transform atomic-scale scientific capabilities into practical manufacturing tools.

What is AtomQ?

AtomQ is the “Quantum Foundry”. For the first time, we have the ability to deterministically engineer matter atom by atom, in the solid state, and at scale. Unlike other technologies that manipulate atoms, AtomQ can create thousands of identical atomic configurations that are stable in atmosphere. This unprecedented ability enables the manufacturing of a multitude of quantum technologies, including scaling the number of qubits for quantum computing, unmatched sensors, and quantum light sources.

AtomQ was born out of deep research of controlling atoms with extremely focused electron beams. A spin-out from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, AtomQ is currently supported by the U.S. Department of Energy through the Innovation Crossroads program .
